Zamboanguena teen Angeline Colonia executed gold medal-winning lifts as she broke the world and Asian youth records in weightlifting during the opening day of the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The 15-year-old lifter from Pasobolong in Zamboanga, shattered two weightlifting records as she delivered 62 kilograms in the Women’s 40 kg Snatch event, eclipsing the previous Youth World and Youth Asian Records of 61 kgs. The decisive win was 6 kgs. off the closest competitor from Vietnam.
Colonia also took the silver in Clean and Jerk with 72 kilograms, just 1 kg. short of the winning lift by the Vietnamese.
The Filipina athlete’s excellent performances in both Snatch and Clean & Jerk gave her a total lift of 134 kgs., placing her in first place with the overall gold medal.
Colonia hails from the same province as the first Filipino Olympic gold medalist, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.
Diaz took to social media to share the video of Angeline Colonia’s winning lift as she praised the teenager’s achievement.
The Grade 11 student from Culianan National High School in Zamboanga City outshone competitors from Vietnam and Indonesia on July 17, the opening day of the tournament which runs until July 25.
In the Men’s Division, Filipino teen lifter Prince Keil delos Santos also delivered double podium finishes in his 49 kg. class.
Delos Santos picked up the bronze in Clean and Jerk after lifting 103 kgs. Combined with his 4th-place 83 kg. in Snatch, the Filipino youth delivered a total of 186 kgs. to win the overall bronze medal.
Filipino athletes joining the same tournament include Youth World Cup champion Rose Jean Ramos (45 kg. class) and 2019 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting champion Vanessa Sarno (71 kg class).
