Back-to-back professional volleyball champion Creamline Cool Smashers has welcomed the call for the team to don the Philippine national colors at the 2022 Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup.
After winning two consecutive Premier Volleyball League (PVL) conferences this year – the Open and Invitational – members of the Creamline championship team said they are ready to smash the competition on the international stage.
PVL president Ricky Palou announced at the Invitational Conference finals which Creamline won against KingWhale of Taipei on August 14, that the champion team will represent the country in the 2022 Asian Volleyball Confederation Cup for Women (AVC Women’s Cup) to be held at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City this coming Sunday, August 21.
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation released on August 17 the list of the 14-member Filipina squad coached by Sherwin Meneses and Assistant Coach Karlo Santos, with Trainer Ariel Morado and Mark Caron for Strength and Conditioning.
In the finals post-game interview with media, Cool Smashers team captain Alyssa Valdez said she looked forward to the opportunity to compete as part of the national team. “I’m also excited to learn from this experience as a team and as an individual,” the top athlete added.
Conference MVP Tots Carlos, Finals MVP Ced Domingo, and Valdez all promised to give their best for the national squad. The Creamline captain also expressed her hope that both her squad and the opposing teams receive support from all Filipino volleyball fans.
Four players of the Creamline championship team – Alyssa Valdez, Jia Morado-De Guzman, Jema Galanza, and Risa Sato – previously competed for the National Team in the Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup in Thailand in 2018.
Players with National Team experience include Kyle Negrito who represented the Philippines in the most recent South East Asian Games, Celine Domingo who competed for the U23 team in Thailand SEALECT TUNA Volleyball Championship, and Tots Carlos, the country representative at the recently concluded PNVF International Challenge.
New members of the National Team Michelle Gumabao, Pangs Panaga, Kyla Atienza, with the rest of the Creamline team are also expected to contribute and give the best game of their lives.
Creamline was in the finals at the inaugural PVL tournament in 2021 but lost to the Jaja Santiago-led Chery Tiggo.
AVC Women’s Cup Schedule
The Philippines competes in Pool A with Vietnam, South Korea, China, and Iran. Japan, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Australia will compete against each other in Pool B.
- August 21, Sunday: Philippines vs. Vietnam
- August 23, Tuesday: Philippines vs. China
- August 24, Wednesday: Philippines vs. Iran
- August 25, Thursday: Philippines vs. Korea
The national women’s team must finish in the top four in Pool A to qualify for the quarterfinals and move forward with its campaign to win the Philippines’ first trophy at the AVC Cup for Women.
