Filipina skater Charmaine Skye Chua and 5 other young skaters dominated the 2015 Asian Junior Figure Skating Challenge (AJFSC) held in Hongkong.
Chua won the gold with a final total score of 40.69 in her Basic Novice Subgroup A Girls Group 5 category. Her score placed her in second spot in the overall skating challenge.
The other Filipina skaters who also bagged gold in different categories are Amanda Sophie Hernandez (Basic Juvenile Girls), Kate Orrock (Basic Pre Novice), Ann Cathryn Lagemann (Basic Pre-Novice Girls), Diane Gabrielle Panlilio (Basic Novice Subgroup A Girls), and Emee Marjorie Dy (Basic Junior Ladies).
Skater Chua, daughter of current Metro Ice Skating Club president Smith Chua, beat Yu Jing Zhao of China who received a total score of 32.63 while Jennifer Taniti of Indonesia earned third place with the score of 28.35.
“I thank God for his blessing. I never thought she would be first in her subgroup and 2nd overall.
She started 4th after the short program, but I think that brought out the best in her, since she knew that she needed to give her best to get a crack at a chance at podium finish,” proud father Smith Chua said.
Twenty one young skaters from the Philippines vied for the medals against stiff competition from the figure skaters of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan.
The annual meet is hosted by the Hong Kong Skating Union as sanctioned by the Asian Skating Union.
