Don’t miss your golden opportunity to rise to unparalleled heights—just like Bobby Lopez, the world’s only double EGOT winner, who also happens to be of Filipino descent.
Born in the sprawling metropolis of Manhattan to a Filipino-American family, Lopez embarked on an academic journey at the esteemed Yale University. From there, he took his initial steps into the world of theater, laying the groundwork for his illustrious career with his work on Avenue Q.
In an unparalleled feat, Bobby Lopez became the youngest person—and the first Asian—to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT) all by the age of 39. Not only that, but he did it in record time, taking just nine years to win all four awards. Fast-forward to March 2018, and Lopez made history yet again by becoming the only individual on the planet to secure a double EGOT. That’s two of each award, solidifying his legendary status in television, music, film, and theater.
“My story is interesting because my father Frank, who is part-Filipino, was born on a ship on the way to the United States from Manila,” said Bobby Lopez in an interview. It is believed that the ship was the last GI boat to leave Manila after World War II and Bobby’s grandmother was aboard on a personal mission to find her father.
As a son of immigrants, Lopez’s work is informed by the question of belonging. Lopez’s wife, Kristen, divulged, “He’s always been trying to figure out who he is, what his place is. That’s where his art comes from. He’s attracted to characters who aren’t sure where they belong. That’s a wonderful place to create art from, I think.”
While his parents never had the opportunity to study music themselves, Lopez shared how his mother Kathy played a major influence that would factor greatly in his career. Bobby credits his mother Kathy, who sadly passed away months before his Oscar win, as the true powerhouse behind his success. He shared, “She was the main force in my childhood who encouraged me to play the piano and to write music and to go for my dream. And she pushed me as hard as she could.”
