SM Retail is ramping up its sustainability efforts by installing waste segregation bins in 75 stores across the Philippines, as part of the #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign. This initiative highlights SM’s ongoing commitment to reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices.
So far, 25 National Capital Region (NCR) stores have installed recycling bins, with plans to expand to 50 more provincial locations in the coming weeks. These bins will allow waste to be sorted into three categories—Recyclable, Disposable, and Compostable—encouraging proper waste management.
“By placing recycling bins in 75 of our department stores, SM Retail is taking a practical step towards improving waste management. We aim to make it easier for our customers and employees to sort and recycle waste, supporting our broader goal of reducing environmental impact through clear and effective waste practices,” said Luis Lava, Vice President for Workplace and Administration at SM Retail Inc.
The campaign extends beyond stores to malls, hotels, residences, resorts, and more. SM also urges tenants to participate in education campaigns.
“At SM, we stand united in this global movement. Our unified waste management and segregation campaign, involving our property, retail groups, and stakeholders, aims to create more impact for us and our communities,” added Engr. Liza B. Silerio, Vice President of SM Supermalls and Program Director for the Environment.
SM’s sustainability efforts also include partnerships with GUUN Co. Ltd. to convert non-recyclable waste into eco-friendly “fluff fuel,” and SM Hotels’ collaboration with WWF-Philippines, diverting 198 tons of food waste from landfills. SMDC’s partnership with Globe and Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) addresses food waste and insecurity, providing 450,000 meals to needy families.
SM’s #SMWasteFreeFuture program showcases the company’s dedication to sustainable practices, driving impactful change in waste management.
