Philippine films “Signal Rock” and “Mamang” won major awards at the 17th Dhaka International Film Festival in January.
Signal Rock, directed by Chito S. Roño from a screenplay by Rody Vera, won “Best Script” in the Asian Competition Section” in the Bangladesh festival.
Mamang, written and directed by Denise O’Hara, won “Best Feature Film” in the Women Filmmakers Section.
The film Signal Rock earned the “Best Actor” award for Christian Bables’ “Intoy” at the 2018 Hanoi International Film Festival in 2018. The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Special Jury Prize winner tells the story of a boy living in a remote area in Samar who is only able to communicate with his OFW sister by going atop rock formations on the island.
The film Mamang, written and directed by Denise O’Hara, is about an old woman’s struggle against the senility of old age so she can be with her only son, Ferdie; however the more she struggles, the more her condition worsens until her memories literally starts coming back and she finds herself reliving a life filled with pain and loss which she must confront again if she wants to stay with her son. The Cinemalaya Film Festival 2018 finalist stars Celeste Legaspi.
The Philippine Embassy in Dhaka headed by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. LV De Guzman received the awards on behalf of the Filipino films.
Signal Rock and Mamang were among 220 movies from around 72 countries from January 10-18 screened in different theaters, cinemas and auditoriums in Dhaka at the annual Dhaka International Film Festival organized by Rainbow Film Society.
