The first Philippine-made test kit for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been upgraded to a 2nd version and has already passed confirmatory tests of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) laboratories.
The GenAmplify COVID 19 Real-Time-PCR Detection Kits developed by scientists from the University of the Philippines Manila National Institutes of Health with the support of DOST and manufactured by Manila HealthTek Inc. was first released in early April after receiving FDA certification for commercial use in hospitals. Its distribution was stopped in June following manufacturing issues.
DOST Secretary Fortunato De la Peña announced the validation of the new batch of test kits in his public briefing made on DOSTv on July 3, 2020.
The FDA issued a certification of validity and reliability for the new GenAmplify COVID 19 test kit following the RITM endorsement.
“So the distribution of the new test kits under this project will continue,” De la Peña said.
