Miss Universe Catriona Gray has made history again as the first Filipino to be immortalized in a wax figure at Madame Tussauds Singapore.
The fourth Filipina Miss Universe titleholder was recreated in wax wearing a replica of her iconic flaming lava gown inspired by the majestic Mayon Volcano of Gray’s Filipina mother’s hometown in the Bicol region of the Philippines. The wax Catriona is also wearing her Philippine flag sun and stars cuff earrings and the Miss Philippines sash.
Gray wore the original fiery red dress made by Filipino fashion designer Mak Tumang for the evening gown competition in the pageant held in Thailand in 2018. It complemented the Filipino-Australian beauty queen’s signature “lava walk” which caught the attention of pageant fans and went viral on social media.
Visitors of Madame Tussauds Singapore can attempt Catriona’s lava walk in the interactive display located in the museum’s TV and film zone starting March 31 until September.
“Hey Universe! The one and only Ms Universe of 2018 @catriona_gray’s wax figure is right here in Madame Tussauds Singapore! Join her as you recreate her famous Lava Walk at Catriona’s one of a kind set. Don’t miss out!” posted Madame Tussauds Singapore on March 30, 2022.
Gray first announced in January 2020 just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck that she was getting her own wax figure at Madame Tussauds.
“Who’s that girl 👀 what a surreal moment to (FINALLY!) launch my very own wax figure at @mtssingapore after 3 years! Kiliiiig akoooo!
“I’m so honored and flattered to be the only Filipino wax figure here in MT Singapore! 🤩🇵🇭
“Also for those that are curious! @maktumang created an ah-mazing replica lava gown! The small differences on the neck line are to hide the ‘seams’ where the head of the wax figure fit onto the body! The lava gowns mesh base presented a challenge but Mak masterfully worked around these! 🥰
“We chose the ‘final walk’ look from @missuniverse sans MU sash and crown, because the interactive concept is to “LavaWalk” with me. 🥰 Also as the only Filipino in MT Singapore, it brings me so much pride to have the PHILIPPINES sash front and center.”
Catriona Gray spoke of putting the spotlight on Filipino talent during the unveiling of her wax figure.
“To be here at Madame Tussauds Singapore as the only Filipino, it is my hope that our fellow kababayans, our fellow Filipinos walk through these halls [and] feel a sense of pride, because that’s really the emotion that I carried on the Miss Universe stage,” Gray said.
“Yes, it is a wax figure of me, but in the dress and the accessories, it was Filipino talent that really allowed me to be at that standard that is so appreciated today…. I really lift this honor to my fellow kababayans, to my fellow Filipino,” the beauty queen who champions all things Filipino added.
Madame Tussauds Singapore is celebrating Catriona Gray’s arrival at the museum by launching a limited promotion for her fans in the month of April. Using the promo code CATRIONAMTSG allows visitors to enjoy 40% off for 5 in 1 tickets (U.P. $44/adult, $32/child). Catriona Gray’s wax figure will be on view until September.
Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach is the first Filipino ever to have her own wax figure at Madame Tussauds. The third Filipina Miss Universe and Gray’s predecessor unveiled her replica in 2019. Wurtzbach’s likeness is housed in the Hong Kong museum.
