It was Filipino wakeboarder prodigy Raphael Trinidad’s first time going into the world stage. But what he didn’t realize then was it would also be the Philippines’ first ever medal finish at the 10th IWWF World Wakeboard Championship in Argentina —and it came from him.
“This is for the country. It really feels good to be standing there on the medal podium,” said Trinidad of his medal finish at the IWWF held in February.
Trinidad grabbed the silver medal in the senior category, following three-time world champion Loir Sofer of Israel. The 17-year-old received a score of 75.33 points to bag a silver medal finish. The Filipino from Cebu also finished fifth place in the Men U-19 category in competition with 28 countries.
The win set Trinidad as the crowd favorite for this year’s Southeast Asian Games.
The Filipino also has the Olympics in his mind—that is, if wakeboarding will be included in the Olympics.
