Multi-awarded actress Joanna Ampil is starring in the United Kingdom staging of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s hit musical, South Pacific.
Joanna Ampil’s international musical theater credits include playing Kim in the West End production of “Miss Saigon”, Fantine in “Les Miserables”, Grizabella in “Cats”, Mimi in “Rent”, Maria in “West Side Story”, Maria in “The Sound of Music”, and Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar”.
Joanna Ampil will be playing the role of the quick-witted Polynesian Bloody Mary in the new staging of “South Pacific”.
“The prestigious #ChichesterFestival will be my home this summer with #SouthPacific,” posted Joanna Ampil on social media in February, confirming her joining the lead cast of South Pacific together with Gina Beck, Julian Ovenden, and Rob Houchen.
The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, is part of the 2020 offerings of the Chichester Festival in Chichester, Sussex, England.
South Pacific, which opened in 1949 with a successful run and has since become one of Broadway’s longest-running hit shows, will have its UK run from July 6 to August 29, 2020.
South Pacific, the musical, is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener set in 1943 on an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean where United States troops are waiting for the war to reach them. It features the hit songs Some Enchanted Evening, Bali Ha’i, and I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.
The new UK production of South Pacific is directed by Artistic Director Daniel Evans whose previous Chichester productions include This Is My Family, Quiz, and Fiddler on the Roof.
Joanna Ampil is a Filipino Pride Advocate who has also delved into nonsinging roles in the Philippines such as the iWant TV web mini series’ “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank 3” and Dreamscape and Heaven’s Best Entertainment’s “Call Me Tita.”
In 2017, Joanna Ampil bagged the Best Actress Award in the 43rd Metro Manila Film Festival for her role as Candida in the film adaptation of “Larawan, the Musical.”
