Pasig River hailed 1st Asia Riverprize champion for reviving waterway

Filipinos took pride in having the Pasig River rehabilitation project awarded the 1st Asia Riverprize, the world’s foremost award in river basin management. The International Riversymposium Riverprize for environmental excellence was received by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission in ceremonies held in October.

Pinay 12-year old is international tennis champ in France

The year started with an impressive win by teenage tennis champion Alex Eala at the Les Petits As-Le Mondial Lacoste Girls Singles Championship Match in Tarbes, France. Eala continued throughout the year to make Filipinos proud with her legacy in international sports history after winning successive tournaments in 2018.

UP and La Salle only PHL schools in World University Rankings 2019

Educational institutions in the Philippines gained world recognition in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2019 edition released in December. The University of the Philippines improved its standing to the top 600 schools, and De La Salle University entered the list in the top 1000 higher education institutions across the globe.

New MMA world champion Joshua Pacio dedicates win to Ompong-stricken Cordillerans

A new Filipino Mixed Martial Arts world champion emerged as Joshua “The Passion” Pacio won the ONE Championship Strawweight belt in September. Pacio dedicated his win to the Igorots and Cordillera people who had suffered damages brought by typhoon Ompong.

Atom Araullo documentaries bag 2 golds at U.S. International Film & Video Festival

In June, broadcast journalist Atom Araullo brought home 2 Gold Camera medals from the prestigious U.S. International Film & Video Festival — one for his first GMA Network documentary special, Philippine Seas, which uncovered the wonders and threats surrounding the world-renowned center of marine biodiversity found in the Philippines, and another for an I-Witness documentary on Rohingya refugees titled “Silang Kinalimutan (The Forgotten).”

Alden Richards’ Alaala brings home Gold Camera Award

Alden Richards’ “Alaala” won the Gold Camera Award from the 50th US International Film and Video Festival.

The GMA Network production bannered by Richards who played the role of Martial Law survivor Bonifacio Ilagan, won in the docudrama category of the international tilt.

Diwata 2 Microsat ready for lift-off end of October
