The Gilas Pilipinas Women National Basketball Team is set to play in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Asia Cup Top 8 matches scheduled for next week in Jordan.
The Philippine team was listed in 6th place among the top 8 teams in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2021 Power Rankings released on September 21, a day before the national women’s squad flew to Amman ahead of the matches that will run from September 27 to October 3, 2021.
Gilas Pilipinas Women will play to stay within the top 3 of Group B where the team is bracketed with Australia, China, and Chinese-Taipei, to move on to the next round of competitions. Group A is composed of Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and India.
The Philippines’ schedule of games at the FIBA Asia Cup is as follows:
- September 27, 9 PM (PST) vs. China
- September 29, 9 PM (PST) vs. Australia
- September 30, 9 PM (PST) vs. Chinese-Taipei
The national team, a mix of veteran and new players, is coached by Patrick Aquino.
Members of the Southeast Asian Games 2019 gold-winning team playing in the Asia Cup include Clare Castro, Afril Bernardino, and Janine Pontejos. Joining them are veteran players Chack Cabinbin, Khate Castillo, Ria Nabalan, Mar Prado, and Andrea Tongco. Debuting in the team are Camille Clarin, Kristine Cayabyab, Ella Fajardo, and Ann Pingol.
The games are to be played at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan.
