Filipino teen women lifters have together tallied 15 gold medals as Vanessa Sarno of Bohol swept her events on the last competition day for the Philippine delegation at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Vanessa Sarno ranked first place with three gold medals in the Junior Women 71 kilograms weight class as she lifted 100kg in Snatch and 130kg in Clean & Jerk for a total of 230kg to take the overall division title.
The Tagbilaran City native’s medals added to the earlier 12 gold medals harvest of fellow Filipino women athletes: new Youth World Record and Youth Asian Record holder Angeline Colonia (2 gold, 1 silver), Rose Jean Ramos (4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Rosegie Ramos (3 gold), and Rosalinda Faustino (3 gold) – further fueling expectations of another female weightlifting gold at the Olympics following Hidilyn Diaz’s historic first win for the Philippines at the Tokyo games.
Sarno’s Junior event performance on July 22, 2022, bettered her previous two-medal haul in the Youth division of the annual athletic meet held in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world and halted sports events.
The 18-year-old also lifted better than her 2021 Asian Weightlifting Championships debut held in Tashkent and at the 2020 Online Youth World Cup organized by Lima, Peru.
The Philippines ended its Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships campaign with 15 gold, two silver, and three bronze medals – two bronze came from Filipino male teen lifter Prince Keil delos Santos.
