Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena won his first gold medal of the season in spectacular fashion, beating Olympic medalists at the 59th Ostrava Golden Spike tilt held in the Czech Republic.
The Tokyo Olympics-bound national athlete earned the top medal for the Philippines after clearing the 5.74-meter mark, earning him the first place in the competition held Tuesday, September 8, 2020.
Asia’s top pole vaulter and currently ranked World No. 16, bested the top pole vaulters in the world rankings such as Renaud Lavillenie of France, USA’s Sam Kendricks, and Thiago Braz of Brazil.
Obiena’s recent feat follows his significant victories of the season including his “Finest Pole Vaulter in the World” silver medal, another silver at Italy’s Triveneto Meeting, and his bronze medal finish at the Diamond League in Monaco.
The Philippines’ champion pole vaulter took to social media to express his gratitude.
“Thank you, God, for the long-awaited win. I offer this to your given grace.
“Truly grateful for the gold medal win at the 59th Ostrava Golden Spike Tournament held at the Czech Republic, against the world’s bests in the pole vault.
“Thank you Philippines, truly proud to represent you,” said Obiena in his Facebook post earlier today, September 9.
