Filipino musicians are getting together on August 24 to stage a benefit show for Chickoy Pura, the frontman-guitarist of the Pinoy rock band, The Jerks.
Chickoy Pura, the singer-songwriter behind social commentary songs “Sayaw sa Bubog,” “Reklamo,” and “Rage” among many other The Jerks staple that energized the nationalist movement through the 1980s and 90s, has been diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma – a type of cancer of the skin. The cancer causes Pura’s skin to erupt in blisters and makes playing the guitar difficult.
When his musician friends heard about the ailment, two benefit shows were immediately organized. The first one dubbed “One For Chickoy” was held on August 18 at the Conspiracy Garden Cafe along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City and was top-billed by Rak of Aegis’ Noel Cabangon and Bayang Barrios, with Cooky Chua, and Gary Granada.
The second show will be staged on Saturday, August 24, at My Brother’s Mustache in Sct. Tuazon also in Quezon City, where Chickoy Pura regularly performs Thursdays despite his illness.
Awit Para Kay Chickoy will have performances from Lolita Carbon, Cooky Chua, Bayang Barrios, Brixio and Dwight, Toto Sorioso, Bobby, Joey, Boy & Wally, Lester and Cynthia, Corky, Kiko & Rene, Albert de Pano, Bong Baybay, Hans Manapat, Noli Aurillo, Mon Espia, and Noel Cabangon.
All proceeds from the benefit shows go to Chickoy Pura’s medical treatments.
