Filipino math students have won four medals in the 25th Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (JBMO) organized online from Chișinău, Moldova in Eastern Europe.
The six-member Philippine national team landed one gold, two silver medals, and a bronze during the international contest for young mathematically gifted students held from June 29 to July 5, 2021.
The Filipino math wizards competed against teams from 20 countries, tying with Cyprus for joint seventh place overall in the virtual competition.
Mohammad Nur Casib, a Grade 8 student of the Philippine Science High School’s Central Mindanao campus In Marawi City, won the country’s gold medal.
Ephraim Filbert Wu, Grade 10 student from Victory International School (VCIS), and 8th-grade student Ervin Joshua Bautista from Southville International School (SISC) both reaped silver medals.
Earning the bronze medal for the Philippines is Grade 9 pupil Armea Dimayacyac from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)-Main Campus.
Other team members include Alexandra Gochuan from St. Jude Catholic School in Manila and John David Magnaye, also from the PSHS Main Campus.
The Philippine team members are all wards of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Phils. (MTG) which promotes excellence in math education in the country, as well as meeting international standards.
Filipino mathletes also bagged medals during the 21st edition of the Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad held in Bulgaria.
Filipino students from the Philippine Science High School-Main Campus and the Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science (ValMaSci) recently bagged three bronze medals at the recently concluded 33rd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Singapore.
