The Filipinas football team has leaped 10 notches closer to a World Top 50 rank as it placed No. 54 in the latest world list released by the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA).
The Philippine Women’s National Football Team reached its highest-ever position following its historic semi-final finish in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup held in India.
Team Filipinas climbed 10 rungs to place No. 54th, making the biggest leap among all the women’s national teams in the new FIFA ranking released on March 25, 2022.
Team Philippines was previously ranked 64th in the world in the last edition of the FIFA Women’s Ranking in December 2021, one spot higher from its 65th rank in 2020.
The Philippine squad now bears 1438.9 points on the FIFA Ranking after achieving historic firsts in the country’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign, which led to a maiden appearance in the semifinals of the regional championship and a ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Filipina booters have also secured the nation’s first qualification to the prestigious World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
The Philippine national team has also improved to rank No. 11 in Asia and No. 5 in Southeast Asia.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) lauded the latest achievement by the Filipinas as they inched closer to the Top 50 in the world rankings.
“It’s really a testament to the hard work and sacrifice of the men and women involved with the team,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta in a statement.
“From team manager Jefferson Cheng to the coaches and staff led by coach Alen Stajcic and to the players, the jump in our rankings is a reward for their commitment and effort. We are proud of our team and we hope that this inspires the Filipino football community to continue supporting our teams,” Araneta adds.
The Philippine Women’s National Football Team (PWNFT), led by their Australian coach Alen Stajci, will compete in the Southeast Asian Games to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam in May.
The Filipinas will also see action in the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championships in Manila in July followed by the 19th Asian Games in September in China.
