Filipino-American Michael Manese has been awarded the 2020 Inwood Film Festival Filmmaker Fund for his new short film, Asian PersuAsian, a comedy with an all-Asian cast.

The New York City-based Manese was one of the eight fund grantees announced by Inwood Art Works on October 21, 2020, via YouTube streaming.

Michael Manese talked about his new short film, Asian PersuAsian, his first project after five years since his “The Pleasure of Being Served” about an undocumented Filip[ina worker that has successfully screened in 22 film festivals and continues to be showcased in the United States, Europe, and the Philippines.

Asian PersuAsian is described as “A fistfight, ugly cries, betrayal, coming out, unrequited love, lovers spat, what else can happen during a public marriage proposal between a couple in front of their closest friends?”

Manese shared during the presentation that his new film concept was developed after he and his wife witnessed back-to-back public marriage proposals in Central Park.

Asian PersuAsian will be funded by Inwood Art Works, a nonprofit organization that works to create and curate professional performing and visual arts in the Inwood community. The Fund was created to financially support and encourage the creation of locally-made cinema in the Inwood NYC community.

The completed film will be automatically submitted to the selection committee for the 6th Annual Inwood Film Festival to be held in 2021.

Michael Manese’s works can be found on Angry Doug Films.

Filipino filmmakers are being feted at the International Film Festival Manhattan Virtual Events this November where Louie Ignacio will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Filipino filmmakers also recently top awards at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
