The iconic 1998 movie Jose Rizal, digitally restored and remastered, will be available for public viewing for free during Cinemalaya this August 2024.
GMA Network announced on July 15 that the critically acclaimed film will be a highlight of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, scheduled from August 2 to 11.
This special screening offers a unique opportunity for audiences to experience the life and legacy of the Philippines’ national hero through a visually enhanced version of the film. The restoration aims to bring new life to the historical epic, ensuring that both new and old generations can appreciate its cultural significance.
The multi-awarded film produced by GMA Films (now GMA Pictures) will have a gala screening on August 7, 4:00 pm at the historic Manila Metropolitan Theater.
Directed by the late Marilou Diaz-Abaya, a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, the Jose Rizal movie tells the life story of the country’s national hero and his journey to martyrdom in December 1896.
The film stars Cesar Montano as Jose Rizal, with Mickey Ferriols as Leonor Rivera, and Chin Chin Gutierrez as Josephine Bracken. Other cast members include Gloria Diaz, Ronnie Lazaro, Pen Medina, Gina Alajar, Jaime Fabregas, Jhong Hilario, and Gardo Versoza.
The legacy and heroism of Rizal continue to inspire the new generations of Filipinos, not just in the Philippines, but also abroad.
In 2021, University of the Philippines historian Dr. Ros Costelo hosted the first-ever Jose Rizal Virtual Walking Tour in Madrid, Spain.
That same year, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) celebrated Rizal Day by unveiling the tallest 3D-printed monument of Dr. Jose Rizal in Bicutan, Taguig City.
Just last year, the Filipino community in Canada secured approval for the installation of a Rizal monument in a park overlooking Niagara Falls.
