Canada is set to honor its Filipino-Canadian community with the first Filipino Heritage Month this June, in the year that marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and the Philippines.
The Filipino Heritage Month celebration will be observed throughout Canada for the first time in June 2019 after the Motion 155 bill authored by Member of Parliament Salma Zahid was passed by the Canadian House of Commons in October 2018.
The bill filed in 2017 declares every June as Filipino Heritage month to commemorate the bond between Filipino and Canadians and acknowledge the contribution of Fil-Canadians to the country’s economy and society.
The month of June was chosen by the bill’s principal author on account of June 12 being the Philippines’ Independence Day.
Now numbering more than 900,000 Filipino migrants first came to Canada in the 1930s.
Canada had also recently seen the development of a curriculum that offers Filipino language and culture studies to students of Alberta, Canada.
