Benguet farmer Mando Baniwas Alonzo turned over a lost bag containing cash worth PHP133,800.75 to Tublay, Benguet Municipal Police Station (MPS) on Christmas Day.
Alonzo, called by many now as the “Honest Farmer” turned over to the police the money, a driver’s license, and a sQuid pay card placed in a sling bag which he found while walking along the road at Sitio Sayatan, Baayan at about 10:00 am on December 25, 2020.
The 53-year-old farmer quickly called the bag’s owner, Roger Bai Santiago, to arrange the return of the bag.
In a Facebook post, the Tublay police station proudly shared the story of how the Benguet farmer handled the situation and chose to do the right thing despite the current financial difficulties brought by the pandemic and holiday festivities.
“Money is one among the top concern we have right now especially in this time of yuletide and period of pandemic. Many of us may face the reality of paying bills, providing for our families and trying to make the most of the festive season but no matter how one would badly need it the spirit of honesty and integrity remained to a person who chose to return the money…
“We salute you Mr. Mando Baniwas Alonzo for your honesty. God bless!” wrote Tublay MPS who shared “The True Spirit of Christmas” story to the netizens.
Santiago, the bag owner claimed his belongings upon representing proof of identity and thanked the honest farmer for his act of kindness.
