Philippine Science High School (PSHS) students showcased Filipino excellence on a global stage at the recent 2023 International Geography Olympiad (iGEO) held in Bandung, Indonesia. These young geographical whizzes brought home bronze medals, proving once again the rich pool of young talents in the Philippines.
Representing the country were Ambrose James Torreon from PSHS – Caraga Region Campus and Andrei Nicolei Uy from PSHS – Central Visayas Campus. These students carved a name for the Philippines at the 19th installment of the prestigious annual iGEO where 46 nations convened and 177 young geographers from around the world gathered to test their mastery in the field.
During the week-long competition that ran from August 8 to 14, the participants undertook a series of rigorous examinations. These included a written response test aimed at gauging their overall knowledge of geography, a fieldwork test assessing their analytical prowess in real-world settings, and a multimedia test measuring their general grasp of geographic concepts. The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Taman Hutan Raya Juanda in Bandung graciously hosted this intellectual event.
The journey to the international stage was not easy; it was forged through hard work and determination. Both Torreon and Uy earned their spots on the team through outstanding performances in the International Geographical Union (IGU)-recognized 12th Philippine Geography Olympiad (PGO) held earlier this February. Uy triumphed as the 1st runner-up, while Torreon clinched the 3rd runner-up position.
News of their victory was warmly received by the community, with the University of the Philippines Geographic Society (UP GeogSoc) leading the celebrations and acknowledging the efforts of the team leaders, Russel Odi from St. Jude Catholic School and Keith Salang from the Philippine Science High School.
