Mandaluyong City Science High School’s (CMSHS) Kyle Coloma and OB Montessori Center’s (OBMC) Jaz Villanueva have made it to the Top 30 of the 2022 Breakthrough Junior Challenge and are vying for the Popular Vote for a chance to get into the final round of the competition that is considered the Oscars of Science.

The 90-second video entries of the two Filipino students from Philippine schools made it to the Popular Vote level of the annual global competition that challenges students to creatively explain a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics, or mathematics.

Coloma and Villanueva passed the initial screening of submissions that are judged based on “the student’s ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways”.

The Filipino students need to get the highest total of Likes and positive reactions (Love, Haha, Wow) on the original post of the video on the Breakthrough Facebook page combined with the total of Likes on the video on the Breakthrough YouTube channel to be named Popular Vote Top Scorer and automatically bypass the next round of judging (Selection Committee) and be placed in the final round of judging. They are also vying for the Asian Regional Champion Prize.

The campaign for the Popular Vote ends on September 20. Here’s how to vote for the Filipino entries:

It is supported by the National Geographic Channel Khan Academy, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (Breakthrough Science Lab).

Jaz Villanueva and Philippine Science High School’s Francine Fabricante made it to the Popular Vote in the 2021 edition of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. Fabricante went on to the final round.

Villanueva and Coloma are aiming to replicate the feat of Philippine Science Eastern Visayas Campus student Hillary Diane Andales who won the 2017 Breakthrough Junior Challenge bringing home millions worth of educational prizes for herself and her school.
