University of Santo Tomas (UST) student nurse Qjiel Mariano has been awarded the George H.W. Bush Inspiration Honors for his work on education projects for the poor.
Mariano was inducted in May 2021 to the Points of Light Honor Roll founded by United States President George Bush to celebrate “Outstanding Individuals Who Help Brighten Communities” with their acts of service, kindness, and civic engagement.
The Filipino nursing student is co-founder of Street to Schools, an organization started in 2016 by UST Junior High School students, namely, Mariano, Alianza Salvador, and Anthea Terrenal with their adviser Caesar Anthony E. Yoma to mobilize projects related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their local community.
The 19-year-old Qjiel Mariano earlier this year was recognized as the Youth Service America (YSA) Everyday Young Hero Awards’ champion of quality education for his Ladders to Literacy project.
The UST student shared with GoodNewsPilipinas.com in an earlier interview that he aspires to be a champion for public health to help aid the country recover from the COVID-19 pandemic through health education, literacy, and campaigning for the rights of children.
Qjiel works alongside different stakeholders from communities across the Philippines, creating chapters of Streets to Schools that engage and impact indigenous youth, children in and out of school, and families.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, Mariano rallied numerous efforts to be able to provide radios, hygiene kits, school kits, and more to ensure that distance learning can thrive among those left behind the most.
