The Philippines’ champion gymnast Carlos Edriel “Caloy” Yulo topped the recent International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) World Rankings in the floor exercise.
Caloy Yulo, who completed two bronze finishes from the All-Japan Gymnastics Championships in Takasaki Arena on December 13, now shares the No. 1 spot with Spain’s Rayderley Zapata bearing 70 points in the recently released World Ranking for men’s artistic gymnastics.
The Filipino gymnastics star is staying ahead of Russia’s Kirill Prokopev (3rd) and Artem Dolgopyat of Israel (4th).
The 20-year-old Yulo became the first artistic gymnast representing the Philippines to win a medal at the World Gymnastics Championships when he won bronze in the floor exercise at its 2018 edition in Doha, Qatar.
Yulo eventually became the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to capture the historic gold in the same tournament series when he was victorious in the floor exercise event in Stuttgart, Germany, in 2019.
The Filipino champion athlete also bagged gold in the men’s floor finals of the 2019 FIG World Cup Gymnastics in Melbourne, Australia.
Caloy Yulo is one of the Filipino athletes who have already qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics along with the Philippines’ top pole vaulter EJ Obiena, and boxers Eumir Marcial and Irish Magno.
