Filipino World War II Veteran Venancio Espinosa has received the Congressional Gold Medal (CGM), the highest civilian award conferred by the United States Congress.
Private First Class (PFC) Espinosa was presented with a personal bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal by COL (Ret) Don Bautista, in recognition of the 93-year-old Filipino veteran’s service to the United States during World War II.
The special private awarding ceremony took place at the Bayanihan Community Center in San Francisco, California on October 26, 2020, organized by the Bayanihan Equity Center (BEC), formerly known as the Veterans Equity Center, and the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project (FilVetREP) who led the CGM legislation which sought to recognize veterans who served honorably at any time between 1941 to 1946.
The Filipino Veterans of World War II CGM Act was passed by U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Obama in 2016 to honor over 260,000 Filipino and Filipino American soldiers who answered the call of duty and bravely served and sacrificed under the American flag.
Ten Filipino WW II veterans were collectively awarded US Congressional Gold Medals in 2019.
