Manila security guard Rene Abelita became a teacher to street kids during the lockdown that closed schools to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease.
The Palawan Pawnshop guard posted near Manila’s Arellano University was seen tutoring street children on how to read and write.
Netizen John Robert Flores managed to take a snapshot of the study session and posted photos on May 27, 2020, that became viral as netizens were touched by his good deed.
Flores said that whenever he walks past the spot, he’d see the same guard tutoring different kids on different days.
Flores writes on Facebook, “Nakakaproud lang kasi kahit di nya kaano-ano, but still tinuruan nya parin kasi may busilak siyang puso ❤. I salute you Kuyang SG, sana patuloy ka parin bigyan ng blessings ni Lord dahil sa mabuting at busilak kang puso para matulungan ang batang yan.”
Other netizens also saluted Abelita.
FB user Ma Lou posted about the known kindness of the security guard saying, “mabait po talaga sya at magalang pa, palabati pa at palangiti…”
Donna Azucena Alimon commented, “Renz Abelita NASA dugo tlg mo Ang matulongin at maawain…at Isa pa Ang pinaka mahalaga don Yung pusong mapagmahal.. Salute tlg AQ don.”
In an interview by Julius Babao posted on the Mission Possible Facebook page, Abelita said that he decided to help the children who pass him by on the street, who had either been out-of-school because of the COVID pandemic or whose family couldn’t afford to pay the upkeep of sending them to school.
Abelita was rewarded by Mission Possible with two sacks of rice, stacks of fresh eggs, a pack of hygiene essentials, and coverage for the renewal of his guard’s license for his compassion.
Because of the need to adapt to the new normal, schooling has turned to blended or fully at-home learning. The Department of Education in the Philippines had issued directives on the new modes of teaching and learning for the new school year that starts on August 24.
Former University of the Philippines Chancellor Michael L. Tan also went online to speak about homeschooling his child during the first Homeschool Online Conference for parents to help educate their children.
