Bamboo and other local forest resources have been used in the new antimicrobial soaps and hand mists developed by Filipino scientists to help Filipinos fight the coronavirus disease.
The personal hygiene products have been developed by the Department of Science and Technology – Forest Products Research and Development Institute(DOST-FPRDI) to aid in the fight against
The new products address the high demand for personal care protection against COVID-19 and are also practical and appealing with natural ingredients natural mostly from indigenous raw materials.
The antimicrobial liquid hand soaps were formulated using cinnamon (Cinnamomum mercadoi Vidal) and bamboo-activated carbon, with Manila elemi oil scents and lavender.
The hand bar soaps, meanwhile, used bamboo charcoal (Bambusa sp), bamboo-activated carbon, sapang (Caesalpinia sappan L.) and tawa tawa (Euphorbia hirta L.), with eucalyptus oil scent.
The bamboo-activated carbon helps remove microorganisms, such as germs, by absorbing them. Available literature on sapang and tawa tawa point to their antimicrobial properties.
DOST-FPRDI also developed an exciting preparation of anti-microbial hand mists for disinfecting hands in the absence of soap and water. The hand mists were made from cinnamon, a proven natural disinfectant, and infused with either lavender or Manila elemi oil scent.
As has been pointed out many times, maintaining personal hygiene such as thorough washing and constant sanitizing of hands, are deemed very important steps in preventing the spread of diseases like the COVID-19.
DOST has been developing and assisting in the development of innovations to combat the coronavirus disease, including researches into the Virgin Coconut Oil as treatment.
The Philippines is also involved in the W.H.O. Solidarity Clinical Trials to test treatments for COVID-19.
SEND CHEERS in the comments below to DOST for innovating on personal care protection against the coronavirus disease.
