Manila City tricycle drivers who have lost their jobs due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) have joined the Food Panda delivery crew.
The delivery app company’s PandaTODA is recruiting and training jobless tricycle drivers from the city of Manila to become Food Panda partner riders.
Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso announced the program as he signed a Memorandum of Agreement on May 11, 2020, with FoodPanda, PESO Manila, and MTPB.
Food Panda Philippines’ Managing Director Daniel Marogy said that all of the tricycle drivers who will be recruited will officially begin training this week at the Manila City Hall and will be provided with pink uniforms and thermo bags.
“We’re all excited to welcome the new riders in the Food Panda family. We hope that with this initiative, we are able to help ease their burden of providing for their families during this difficult time,” said Marogy.
Mayor Isko said that he is very grateful to Food Panda for choosing Manila to give opportunities to the tricycle drivers who have lost their jobs.
“Sa industriya ng tatlong gulong, we are very happy and excited because at least this will give us a chance for tatlong gulong industry na magkaroon ng extra income while they are under ECQ or maybe in the near future under GCQ,” said the Manila City mayor who is known to have been a tricycle driver himself in his younger days.
“With tricycle drivers, they’ve been there for quite some time so they even know to a point who they are going to deliver it to because they are familiar with the house, the address because these are regular customers of tricycle drivers within the community. Kaya mas efficient,” Moreno added.
“The new normal seems to be that there is a continued demand for delivery services and we need to ensure that the supply of riders is going to be adequate. At the same time, there are limited income opportunities for the people within those communities so it’s a very happy partnership,” Marogy added when asked if they are willing to extend the program after the ECQ or GCQ.
Mayos Isko said that he agrees with the Food Panda view that there will be high demand of food delivery services in the coming weeks or months as long as the COVID-19 pandemic remains.
“I think lalaki ang percentage ng mga tao. They would rather buy online delivery systems to keep themselves safer at the same time they enjoy the food they want,” Moreno said.
The Manila leader also said the partnership will help residents remain in their homes because their food can be delivered to them.
“Dahil sa serbisyong hatid ng Food Panda, ang mga Manileño ay mas nahihikayat na manatili sa kanilang mga tahanan. Hindi na nila kailangang lumabas dahil maaari na silang magpa-deliver ng kanilang pagkain,” added Moreno as he thanked the company for supporting the Manila community.
KFC and Tokyo Tokyo and Puregold supermarket have also agreed to hire the seniors and PWDs who wish to continue working, in line with a program for equal job opportunities in partnership with the capital city of the Philippines.
