Aldrean Alogon, the son of a farmer and an elementary school principal in Capiz in Central Philippines, is all set to study in America’s Wesleyan University after winning a $300,000 scholarship grant.
The Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus (PSHS WVC) graduate will be a member of the Wesleyan University Class of 2023 as a Freeman Asian Scholar from the Philippines, a scholarship awarded to future leaders.
Alogon was a student leader at the PSHS WVC and served as the PSHS-WVC Student Alliance Vice President for Internal Affairs and the PSHS WVC Banggui-anay 2018 Community Relations Officer.
In an interview with Town and Country, Aldrean revealed how “he hopes to one day lead the country in some way. His experiences living in an underprivileged community has instilled a sense of compassion for others who are struggling to make it through everyday life.”
“I’ve seen people dying without even setting foot outside their provinces. I’ve seen families sacrificing two or three meals to alleviate the fees in the hospital. It’s just so unfair that even amid how these people work hard, they still get the bare minimum,” he says. “I dream of a developed Philippines. I pray to become an instrument to improve the lives of my people, some even my friends, and relatives,” said the incoming university freshman.
Aldrean Alogon recently went on social media with a note to inspire others by his story. “I live in a 4th class municipality, basically a farmland, in the prejudged province of Capiz. I lost my mother when I was 15, shaking my life’s firmest beliefs and foundations. I also had my lowest, poorest moments, but I rose above it all. Money is not a hindrance, but simply a means. When I tried my luck applying for my university, I only spent the great sum of Php 150 for my father’s tax exemption certification,” recalled the Philippine Science High School state school scholar.
“I have what I have because of generous and believing people and institutions who paid for what could have prevented me from reaching my dreams. Hope in the kindness of people,” Alogon added.
“Dream. Dream big, start for the ones you love. Don’t look at yourself as a liability, look at yourself as someone who can do something. We are young. Some our age may have achieved glorious feats already, but again, this isn’t a race. Take your time. GO TO SCHOOL! Local or abroad, education will lift us up,” the young campus leader wrote.
The Wesleyan University website welcomed Alogon and described him as an excellent student who twice represented the Philippines in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics and “is passionate about studying astronomy and serving his community.”
