Thirteen-year-old Cebuana karateka Janine Narboada won the silver medal at the 2020 Shureido World League E-Kata competition.
The teen athlete from the Philippines placed second in the online international kata event held last July 22 to 31, 2020.
Narboada competed with 32 other karatekas from around the globe. She was the sole Cebuana competitor under 14 years old.
The online platform for the karate tournament made it possible for the young athletes to take part in the competition amid the global COVID-19 pandemic that has restricted sporting events.
Narboada, who hails from Barangay Talamban in Mandaue City, is a member of the Sports Karatedo Organization (SKO) of Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City. Jess Paredes, SKO chief instructor, says the pandemic’s restrictions posed no problem to him and his students’ trainings. Karate trainings for Narboada and SKO’s karatekas are being carried out virtually.
Narboada looks forward to the next series in the kata e-tournament, in which she and other SKO karatekas are also set to compete. The second part of the series will be held from August 19 to August 28, 2020.
Wysocka Emilia from Poland took home the gold medal, while karatekas Kennaway Madelyn of United States and Janse van Renseburg Gisselle of Denmark were awarded bronze medals.
Last year, the Cebuana karateka emerged victorious from the 1st Shureido Cup in Malaysia and during the Asia-Pacific Gojukai Cup in Lapu-Lapu City. She received gold medals from both events.
Our Filipino athletes are still making us proud amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Filipino karateka, James De Los Santos, has just won gold in the Balkan virtual Kata. He also nabbed the top spot at the E-Tournament Korokotta Cup 2020.
The Philippines’ top pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena won silver in his return to outdoor tournaments in Italy. Obiena is set to battle fellow 2021 Tokyo Olympians in a virtual contest this coming August.
SEND CONGRATULATIONS in the comments below to 13-year-old Cebuana karateka Janine Narboada for winning the silver at the world kata e-tourney.
