Sisters Rose Jean and Rosegie Ramos from Zamboanga City reaped medals during the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Online Youth World Cup hosted by Lima, Peru this year.
The Philippines’ teenage weightlifters together bagged a gold, three silvers, and one bronze medal in the IWF online event which is currently being held from November 11 to 18, 2020, with more than 400 athletes from 62 participating countries competing via live streams due to the ongoing threat of the novel coronavirus disease.
15-year-old Rose Jean captured the gold in the 65-kilogram division snatch (63 kg) and took the silver in total (138 kg) while 17-year-old Rosegie copped silvers in a 55-kg division snatch (78 kg) and total (176 kg) and bronze in clean and jerk (98 kg).
The siblings train in Olympic medalist Hidilyn Diaz’s own gym in Zamboanga for aspiring athletes in the Philippines. The Ramos sisters say they look up to the Filipina weightlifting champion Diaz, who is expected to enter the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.
Rio Olympics silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz hopes to inspire the next generation of Philippine athletes and earlier wrote a book detailing her Olympic journey to encourage athletes, especially young girls, to pick up weightlifting as a sport.
Cebuana Anne Betua and Asian Youth gold medalist Vanessa Sarno of Bohol are also expected to compete in the next days of the IWF tournament.
