Filipino math wizards bagged 27 gold awards, 27 silvers, 55 bronzes, and 18 merit awards in the 2021 World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) held virtually for the second consecutive year amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Philippine team finished strong and competed amongst teams from around the world in the prestigious mathematics tilt for kindergarten, primary, and secondary school students.
The national delegation’s awardees were led by three Filipino students who emerged as the world champions of their respective categories.
Pinoy mathletes Richwynn Cedric Ong (Senior Secondary group) of Xavier School San Juan and Erich Almario Paredes (Secondary 3) of International School Manila both became two-time world champions of the international math competition.
Another young Filipino student, Tyler Eoin Uy of La Salle College Antipolo, was also named a world champion of the Primary 2 group in the world contest.
Comprised of qualifiers who are all final round gold winners of the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO), Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO), or the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (Big Bay Bei), the WIMO provides a platform to nurture and stimulate young people’s interest in learning mathematics and strengthen their abilities.
The WIMO is hosted and organized by Olympiad Champion Education Centre (OCEC). The online examination topics included Logical Thinking, Arithmetic/Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Combinatorics.
Winners were announced in a virtual awards ceremony in February 2022. The full results of WIMO 2021 may be viewed on the Math Olympiad Training League INC – MOTLI Facebook Page.
Team Philippines earlier bagged 95 gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 5th Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge as well as 23 awards at the 13th Asian Finals of the World Math-Fusion Olympiad, both held in 2019.
