Wesley So won his first title this year at the World Chess Armageddon Championship Series: Americas leg held in Berlin, Germany, and is advancing to the Grand Finale of the tournament unique for dramatic time-pressured games and featuring technological innovations such as the players’ real-time heart rate monitoring.

The Filipino American Grandmaster was crowned champion after delivering a flawless performance in the first event of the uniquely thrilling world series which wrapped up on March 12, 2023 (March 13 Philippine time).

The three-time United States Chess Champion originally from the Philippines ruled the Armageddon Championship Series participated by 8 American champions and eventually defeated Sam Shankland in the final event on the last day of the series which began on March 6.

The 29-year-old Wesley So, who registered his highest heart rate at 177 bpm on March 11, was victorious over top players and streamers Shankland (USA), Andrew Tang (USA), Leinier Dominguez (USA), Ray Robson (USA), Eric Hansen (Canada), and online qualifiers Renato Terry and Jose Martinez from Peru.

In the post-game interview, So said his victory is a big deal for him since he has not won a title in the last four months. His last title win was the inaugural Chess.com Global Chess Championship in November 2022.

Wesley so is the current leader of the FIDE Circuit, the newest qualification path to the 2024 Candidates Tournament which decides the challenger for the World Championship match.

Presented as a tourney with “nail-biting drama, sky-high heart rates, and rule-breaking moves, it’s shaking up the world of chess”, the Armageddon Championship Series will hold its Grand Finale in September.
