Filipino-born chess Grandmaster Wesley So is among the 15 World’s Highest-Earning eSports Players of 2020.
The 27-year-old So representing the United States of America was reported by US-based esports bookmaker Unikrn as having taken home $246,180 or approximately Php11,830,000 in prize money won from online tournaments held last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
So placed 12th on the list topped by Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the world number 1-ranking player whom So beat for the 2020 Skilling Open title of the Champions Chess Tour and the 2019 World Fischer Random Chess Championship.
In 2020, Wesley So reclaimed the United States Chess Championship title, co-shared the world title of the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz with Magnus Carlsen, and won the 1st United States Clutch Chess Champions Showdown.
So was confirmed by FIDE on January 13 as one of the ten players playing as full tour participants in the 2021 Grand Chess Tour as it returns to over-the-board events.
Wesley So is expected to see action in the following 2021 tourneys:
- Superbet Chess Classic: June 3 – 15, 2021, Bucharest, Romania
- Paris Rapid & Blitz: June 16 – 23, 2021, Paris, France
- Croatia Rapid & Blitz: July 5 – 12, 2021, Zagreb, Croatia
- St Louis Rapid & Blitz: August 9 – 16, 2021, St. Louis, Missouri USA
- Sinquefield Cup: August 16 – 28, 2021, St. Louis, Missouri USA
