Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls performed in Tagalog for the first time and dedicated her song cover of Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid’s “Pangako” to Filipino fans.
The Filipino-American singer’s rendition of the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) classic is part of musical director Troy Laureta’s album “Kaibigan: A Troy Laureta OPM Collective” co-produced by ABS-CBN Music International. According to Scherzinger, the project felt like the perfect opportunity as she had always wanted to honor and reconnect with her Filipino heritage.
“I really hope that this collaboration makes my Filipino fans proud!” Nicole Scherzinger wrote on November 23, 2020.
“This was my first time singing in Tagalog…I hope you all enjoy it as much as I loved singing it from all my heart to yours. Pangako means promise and it’s available now on all streaming platforms,” she added.
Nicole Scherzinger’s “Pangako” originally written by Ogie Alcasid and performed by Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, was uploaded on YouTube by ABS-CBN Star Music on November 21, 2020. Other tracks produced by Troy Laureta in the album include Filipino song covers by international singers Ailee, Pia Toscano, Cheesa Laureta, and Sheléa, among others.
The Filipino-American producer Laureta says he immediately thought to approach the Hawaii-born Scherzinger for his OPM “Kaibigan” series.
“When I thought about who would do this song justice, I thought of one person…She came in and slayed it like an OPM Queen! I couldn’t ask for a better #KAIBIGAN,” says Laureta.
The Pussycat Dolls member and Grammy-nominated recording artist Scherzinger was recently honored in the list of 75 Most Influential Filipino-Americans (MIFA) of 2020 released for Filipino-American History Month (FAHM) celebrated every October.
