Filipino champion pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena has delivered a gold-winning performance in the L’Aquila, Italy leg of the 2022 European City of Sports event.
Obiena cleared 5.85 meters in his jump in front of the crowd gathered at the majestic Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio.
The 26-year-old athlete went on social media to post the videos of his winning jump at the sports event held on May 30 (May 31, Manila time).
“It’s not everyday we get to jump in such beautiful places. 5.85m for the🏅here in L’Aquila Italy. Such a beautiful venue jumping in front of Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio.

The World No. 5 in men’s pole vaulting has also qualified for the following events:
- July 15 to 24, 18th World Athletics Championships – Oregon, USA
- September 12 to 25, 19th Asian Games – Hangzhou, China
