Filipino champion pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena has set a new Philippine outdoor record en route to winning the gold medal in the Jump & Fly International Athletics Meet held in Mossingen, Germany.
Obiena, the country’s first qualifier to the Tokyo Olympics, cleared 5.85 meters on his third attempt in the men’s pole vault event on June 11, 2021 (June 12, Philippine time).
The Philippines’ champion athlete shattered the national outdoor record he himself set at 5.81 meters in Chiari, Italy in 2019, exceeding the Olympic standard of 5.80m.
“Maligayang #arawngkalayaan Pilipinas 🇵🇭 New Philippine Record of 5.85m at Mössingen, Germany,” EJ Obiena wrote on his Facebook account.
The Jump & Fly meet is Obiena’s third tournament of the season and takes place ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in July.
The 25-year-old athlete earlier bagged another gold medal in the Folksam Athletics Grand Prix in Gothenburg, Sweden. He also finished with a silver at the FBK Games held in The Netherlands.
