The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) has achieved a milestone with its MODeL chatbot solution, Openg, clinching the Best Moodle Innovation award at the recent Moodle Moot 2024 in Nagasaki, Japan. This recognition solidifies UPOU’s role as a pioneer in online learning, showcasing its commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology to support its students and faculty.
Openg has been a game-changer for UPOU’s MODeL platform, the hub for its Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). The platform, which plays a critical role in delivering a wide array of courses, has been significantly enhanced by Openg’s introduction, providing round-the-clock support for users’ diverse needs, from account setup to course registration.
The UPOU website reports that the development of Openg was led by the UPOU ICT Development Office, under the guidance of Dr. Reinald Adrian Pugoy and his team, demonstrating UPOU’s dedication to innovation and quality in education. With 24 MOOCs offered in 2024, UPOU is advancing its educational mission while contributing to global sustainable development goals, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility in learning.
The chatbot’s integration into the MODeL platform is particularly notable for its direct embedding into the Moodle theme, a strategy that enhances user interaction and efficiency. This forward-thinking approach benefits more than UPOU – it also sets a precedent that could inspire other institutions to adopt similar technologies, promoting a more interconnected and supportive online educational environment.
As UPOU celebrates 29 years of excellence and leadership in distance learning, the institution remains focused on providing accessible, high-quality education. The success of Openg is a testament to UPOU’s innovative spirit and unwavering commitment to improving the online learning experience.
The UPOU, a pioneer in online education in the Philippines, continues to expand its offerings, following the success of its 23 free courses last year and its Bridge English and Mathematics programs during the pandemic.
