The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) is joining the World Earth Day celebrations in Iloilo City to call for urgent climate action.
While Earth Day 2022 events around the world carry the theme “Invest in Our Planet” and are expected to again gather advocates to address the urgency of the climate change crisis, the Iloilo City event titled “Shindig: Act. Play. Shop.” will be marked with beach cleanups, trash + sand + art installation, nature pledge mural painting, and an earth bazaar, among others.
UPV is collaborating with 8 Villa Beach House at Villa Varona in Villa Baybay and the Iloilo City Tourism and Development Office for the three-day event at 8 Villa Beach kicking off on World Earth Day in April 22 until April 24, 2022.
Villa Beach was formerly a popular Iloilo destination until it faced concerns about solid waste management and illegal settlers in the area. Ian Varona of 8 Villa Beach has been working with the city towards ensuring that the beach destination is restored to its former glory.
On April 24, the last day of the event, the organizers will hold film screenings with Q&A interaction with filmmakers from UP Visayas Films, USAID Fish Right Program, SEAning Kabataan Short Film Contest, and Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video.
The Iloilo City World Earth Day Celebration at 8 Villa Beach is supported by earthing PH, MORE Electric and Power Corporation, UP Validus Amicitia Brotherhood, San Miguel Beer, RMN, Clucks Sarap, Hulag ta Sta. Cruz, Fish Rights, Ibadiba artist Pam Santos, and Panay News.
Earth Day celebrations in the Philippines have been marked with events such as the rescue of endangered Philippine eagles and the push for renewable solar energy.
