The University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (UPSA) and Cavite’s Imusicapella were in the Top 5 finalists of the 2019 European Grand Prix (EGP) for Choral Singing held in Arezzo, Italy.
The two Filipino choral groups reached the finals of the competition held on August 24 (August 25 Philippine time).
The Quezon City-based UP Singing Ambassadors under conductor Edgardo L. Manguiat is one of the Philippines’ foremost choral groups that has consistently brought honor and prestige to the country with championship titles from competitions such as the Certamen International de Habaneras y Polifonia in Spain, the Sing Berlin International Choir Festival and Competition in Germany, and the Concorso Polifonico Internazionale “Guido d’Arezzo” in Italy which earned the state university choir a slot at the 2019 EGP.
UPSA performed “Awit ng Pag-Alala” composed by 2019 American Prize winner, Nilo Alcala, with text by E. Manguiat.
Imusicapella Chamber Choir under conductor Tristan Ignacio is a church choir based at the Our Lady of the Pillar Parish in Imus City, Cavite. The Filipino choir reached the 2019 EGP finals as the winner of the International May Choir Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. It recently placed 2nd at the 6th International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf in Germany.
The two Filipino choral groups competed with three other international choirs – Somnium Ensemble from Finland, the University of Houston Concert Chorale from the United States of America, and Youth Choir Kamer from Latvia which emerged winner in the 31st edition of the EGP for Choral Singing.
