University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) rice scientist Dr. Glenn Gregorio has been appointed as a United Nations (UN) Food Systems Champion of the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit.
The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) announced on March 11, 2021, that the Filipino director of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) has been named one of the new champions of the upcoming UN Summit.
As part of the Champions Network, Dr. Gregorio will join individuals and leaders from around the world who are passionate about making food systems more sustainable and just.
Dr. Glenn B. Gregorio, a professor at the Institute of Crop Science, College of Agriculture and Food Science at the UPLB, worked at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) for twenty-nine years as a plant breeder researcher, during which he developed more than 15 rice varieties, most of which are salt-tolerant.
In 2018, Dr. Gregorio was bestowed the Academician title by the NAST. He is also a recipient of The Outstanding Young Men and the Outstanding Young Scientist awards, both in 2004, and Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh Medal Award in 2012.
The 2021 UN Food Systems Summit, due to be held in September, will launch bold new actions to transform the way the world produces and consumes food and deliver progress on all Sustainable Development Goals.
More Filipino champions for the United Nations include Cordillera native Joan Carling who was awarded the United Nations Champion of the Earth while Dr. Jaime C. Montoya of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to join the scientists who will prepare the draft 2023 Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Report.
