The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons (UP Fighting Maroons) is set to kick off its campaign for a back-to-back championship when the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 opens this weekend at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The UP Men’s Basketball Team revealed its game plan to establish itself as UAAP royalty ahead of the inter-university tournament opening day on Saturday, October 1, 2022.
The UP Fighting Maroons became a fabled legend as it stopped the winning streak of then-defending champions Ateneo Blue Eagles in the Season 84 Battle of Katipunan that ended in favor of the state university, giving the varsity team its historic UAAP Men’s Basketball Championship title – the first in 36 years since 1986 and the third since the 1939-40 season.
The former perennial UAAP cellar dweller which overturned hurdles with the NowhereToGoButUP Foundation in the lead eventually became a top contender in 2018 on its way to the championship secured just this May 2022.
The UP Fighting Maroons is now regarded as the team to beat in the new UAAP season, with a majority of the university clubs attending the Wednesday media conference picking out the UP men as the top contenders for the championship.

- 4 PM: University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons vs. De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers
October 2, Sunday
- 2 PM: National University (NU) Bulldogs vs. University of the East (UE) Red Warriors
- 4 PM: Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws vs. Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles
