The University of the Philippines (UP) and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) led 7 Philippine universities in the 2020 list of London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR) and Asia University Rankings (AUR).
UP, ADMU, De La Salle University (DLSU), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) are again in the 2020 edition of the QS World University Rankings which showcases the world’s top 1,000 universities, repeating their 2019 appearance.
The 4 top universities are also in the QS Asia University Rankings of the top 550 Asian universities, together with the University of San Carlos, Siliman University, and Mapua University.
1. UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
The University of the Philippines has been consistently ranking on top of the university rankings. UP is the only state university among the seven Philippine Universities on the QS University Rankings which measure the educational institutions’ Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty, and International Students.
UP moved up to rank #356, a jump of 28 notches from its #384 rank in 2019.
UP also maintained its 72nd spot on the 2020 QS Asia University Rankkings.
The UP had 22 subjects ranked in the QS WUR Subject Rankings including the following:
- Development Studies – #51-100 top universities
- Performing Arts – #51-100 top universities
- Law and Legal Studies – #251-300 top universities
- Medicine – #301-350 top universities
UP’s Graduate Employability Ranking is at the #301-500 top universities bracket.
The UP community has also been leading Philippine universities in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic with its doctors manning the UP-Philippine General Hospital, a COVID-19 referral center, its campus serving as testing and quarantine center, its scientists developing innovative medical devices and tools for frontliners and patient care, students offering health solutions, putting up various information campaigns, with UP alumni, athletes, students, staff, and faculty setting up donation drives for frontliners and the poor affected by the community quarantine to stop the spread of the virus.
2. ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY
The Philippine Jesuits-run Ateneo de Manila University registered on the QS World University Rankings in the 601-650 bracket in 2020, one bracket up from 661-700 in 2019.
Ateneo’s QS Asia University Rankings 2020 is at 124th, down from its #115 spot in 2019.
Ateneo had 4 subjects ranked in the QS World, with English and Literature ranked #201-250.
Ateneo’s Graduate Employability Ranking is at the #161-170 top universities bracket.
Ateneo De Manila University community has engaged in fundraisers, donation drives, and presented the Virgin Coconut Oil research as a solution to the public health crisis while addressing the needs of its academic community.
3. DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY
The Brothers of the Christian Schools-run De La Sa University maintained its 2019 ranking on the QS World University Rankings 2020 at 801-1000.
DLSU’s QS Asia University Rankings is at #156.
In QS Subject Rankings, DLSU was ranked in 5 subjects with the highest ranking for English Language and Literature, and Linguistics, both in the #201-250 brackets of top universities.
DLSU’s Graduate Employability Ranking is at the #301-500.
DLSU and Ateneo communities together raised over 10 million pesos to support COVID-19 response efforts in the Philippines through Bayanihan Musikahan. DLSU also addressed its academic community needs while students held online fundraisers.
4. UST
The four-centuries old University of Santo Tomas shares the 801-1000 bracket with DLSU.
UST’s QS Asia ranking in 2020 is at #179, down from its #162nd spot in 2019.
UST ranked by Subject for Medicine at #551-600.
UST’s Graduate Employability in 2020 went up to #251-300, one notch up from its 301-500 rank in 2019.
UST community members are among the medical frontliners and have engaged in fundraisers for COVID-19 efforts.
UP, Ateneo, DLSU, and UST are joined by the University of San Carlos, Mapua University, and Silliman University in the QS Asia University Rankings for the top 550 educational institutions in the region.
One of the top universities outside Manila, the University of San Carlos ranked in the 351-400 bracket of the 2020 QS Asian rankings, down one notch from its 301-350 spot in 2019.
The Philippines’ biggest engineering school, Mapúa University, was ranked in the 451-500 bracket in the 2020 QS rankings, down one notch from its 400-450 spot in 2019.
Dumaguete’s Silliman University maintained its 2019 spot at the 451-500 bracket in the QS Asia University Rankings 2020.
Eight Philippine Universities made it to the 2019 edition of the QS Top 500 Universities in Asia.
University of Santo Tomas, University of Asia and the Pacific, De La Salle University, and Mapua University are also on the 2020 edition of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Impact Rankings based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
