The University of the Philippines (UP) stands out among 363 higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country, securing a spot in the top 1000 of the 2024 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. This global accolade recognizes UP’s unparalleled contribution to academic excellence, impactful research, and commitment to open-access knowledge, distinguishing it among over 31,000 institutions across 200 countries.
In this biannual assessment, UP not only excelled in the Philippines but also made significant strides on the global stage. UP Diliman led the charge, ranking first nationally in both Impact and Excellence metrics. Meanwhile, the UP System clinched the third spot in Openness, with UP Manila, UP Visayas, UP Mindanao, UP Cebu, and UP Baguio also earning commendable positions. Remarkably, UP Diliman leaped 93 places to 856th in the world, maintaining its status as the only local university in the top 1,000.
The rankings also featured other leading Philippine universities in the country’s top 10, including De La Salle University Manila, Ateneo de Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, University of San Carlos, Mapua University, Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology, and Visayas State University, showcasing the nation’s robust educational landscape.

The Webometrics Ranking, produced by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), evaluates institutions based on their web presence’s impact, excellence in research, and openness:
- 50% VISIBILITY (or IMPACT) – Web contents Impact measured by the number of external networks (subnets) linking to the institution’s webpages
- 40% EXCELLENCE (or SCHOLAR) – Top cited papers measured by the number of papers amongst the top 10% most cited in each one of all 27 disciplines of the full database
- 10% TRANSPARENCY (or OPENNESS) – Top cited researchers with the number of citations from the Top 310 authors (excluding the first top 20)
Notably, UP Diliman and De La Salle University Manila were previously recognized for their outstanding web content and impact in the 2020 Webometrics ranking.
