The University of the Philippines (UP) soared 100 places from its 2019 ranking to break into the world’s top 500 educational institutions in the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR).
The premier state university is now in the 401-500 group of 1,396 ranked research universities from 92 countries in the new THE WUR list released today by the London-based independent rankings.
UP has been ranked in THE WUR as among the top 1,000 educational institutions since 2017. The national university steadily climbed over the years to its current top 500 ranking, moving up from top 600 in the 2019 edition, and top 800 in the 2018 rankings.
UP improved its scores on all but one area in THE WUR evaluations, and made top 11 in terms of citations, placing it among the prestigious universities that have “influence in spreading new knowledge and ideas.”
THE World University Rankings 2020 scored UP’s performance among research-intensive universities using 13 performance indicators in five areas:
1. citations (86.9 %, up from 69.1%), 159th place, top 11
2. teaching (24.1%, up from 21.7%)
3. research (17.2 %, up from 16.4%)
4. industry income (39.4%, up from 35.8%)
5. international outlook (37.9%, down from 39.5 in 2019)
The University of the Philippines has been ranked high in other THE World University Rankings lists including the Top 95 spot in the Asia University Rankings, Top 110 in the Asia-Pacific University Rankings, Top 87 in Emerging Economies University Rankings, and even beat Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge in the World University Rankings by Subject, Health research.
UP, established in 1908, is a state-funded network of eight constituent universities across the Philippines.
UP Diliman is the main campus which houses the UP System center.
UP Manila specializes in health sciences and runs the country’s premier state-funded hospital, the Philippine General Hospital.
UP Los Baños in Laguna focuses on forestry, agriculture and environmental studies and also owns the 10,500-acre Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve.
UP Open University is the distance-learning leader which runs a range of online courses for home and overseas students.
UP Visayas takes a special interest in fisheries and marine sciences.
UP Mindanao emphasizes studies on architecture and biotechnology programs.
UP Cebu, used to be part of UP Visayas but became independent in order to focus on business and IT courses.
UP Baguio enjoys a reputation as a national leader in sciences, mathematics, and humanities.
