The University of Mindanao Chorale (UM Chorale) secured the Grand Prix Championship and two Gold Prizes at the 2024 Taipei International Choral Competition (TICC) in Taiwan.
TICC social media announced the UM Chorale victory on August 3, along with the 2nd prize win for Taiwan and 3rd place for Indonesia. The event also recognized eight Category Winners and six Special Prize recipients.
Led by conductor Tim Atencio, UM Chorale triumphed over nine other choirs, including groups from the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
The Davao-based UM Chorale also earned two Gold Prizes as Category Winner for Mixed and Musica Sacra.
In the competition, fellow Filipino Grand Prix finalists University of Baguio (UB) Voices Chorale claimed the Ethnic/Traditional Music category, while Tarlac State University Chorale won the Contemporary Music category.
Among the Special Prize winners were the De La Salle University – Dasmarinas Chorale, awarded Best Performance of A Capella Work, and UB Voices Chorale’s Christi Joy Basilan, named Outstanding Soloist.
Their impressive win at the TICC also qualifies UM Chorale for a nomination to the 2025 World Choral Championship (WCC).
On social media, UM Chorale expressed gratitude to its supporters and announced preparations for the WCC and the Asia Choral Grand Prix 2025, a prestigious Asian tri-festival competition among Grand Prize winners of the Bali International Choir Festival (BICF), Singapore International Choral Festival (SICF), and the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival (AOVICF), where UM Chorale claimed victory in 2023.
