Filipino radiographer Apollo Exconde’s Open MRI design, which was submitted to LEGO Ideas for adoption as an official design of the toy bricks manufacturer, is halfway to being accepted as an official design.
Exconde, a De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (now De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute) in Cavite graduate, designed the LEGO Open MRI to help first-timer, young, plus-sized, anxious patients prepare and understand what they would experience during MRI scanning with the use of LEGO bricks.
The LEGO Open MRI idea is designed to visualize and show patients what happens in the different stages of the MRI scanning process that helps eliminate any misconceptions and anxiety that might arise from the experience.
The LEGO Open MRI design is a perfect replica with figures positioned in a wide, unobstructed view so the patient can see how it would look like when they are being scanned, how far their head will go through which makes it easier to explain and answer any questions the patient may have.
The toy design has a sliding table feature that does not only show where your head and body will be but it shows as well what coil will be placed and how you will be positioned.
The LEGO Open MRI can be transformed into another scanner replica with the same bricks. You can create an Upright MRI, CT scan and DEXA scan.
“I hope to bring closer these unsung medical imaging scanners to the world, reintroduce them to anxious patients like kids, make it fun and interactive. To exhibit its medical benefits and create consciousness about radiology,” said Exconde in his description of the LEGO Open MRI toy design.
Apollo Exconde, a Senior Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiographer who has received the “Incredible Customer Service Award” from London’s Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, submitted the Open MRI design to LEGO in 2018.
The LEGO Open MRI Product Idea reached the 5,000 supporters count on November 9. Exconde needs 5,000 more supporters within the next 6 months to reach the final milestone of 10,000 supporters to have his idea turned into reality by LEGO worldwide.
“I hope the world will help me help all those who have scan-related anxiety issues finally able to have their MRI,” said Apollo Exconde as he asked for more support.
