Sydney Tancontian wins historic 1st Philippine & South East Asian medal in World Sambo Championships

Filipina athlete Sydney Tancontian executed a historic finish at the 2018 World Sambo Championships in Romania, picking up the country’s first medal in the event’s history.

Tancontian’s bronze medal was also the first for a South East Asian athlete in the 80th edition of the games held on Bucharest from November 9-11.

Tancontian, a senior high school student from the University of Santo Tomas, competed in the Women’s Sambo +80kg division and emerged with a 2 wins – 1 loss scorecard.

The Davao-native picked up a cash prize of 1,500 USD for her 3rd place finish in the World Sambo Championships that brought together athletes from 80 nations.

Sydney Tancontian, the Philippines’ medal winner, was coached by her father Paolo Lim Tancontian.
