Sonny Calvento’s award-winning Filipino short film “Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss” will represent the Philippines in the upcoming 22nd Mecal, Festival Internacional de Cortometrajes y Animación de Barcelona in Spain.
The film’s Facebook page announced the good news about its inclusion in the festival which normally receives more than 5,000 short film entries from all over the world annually.
The 22nd Mecal of Barcelona, Spain will also be the venue for the international premiere of “Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss” after winning the Audience Choice Award at the QCinema International Film Festival in October 2019.
Directed by Sonny Calvento, who made headlines after winning the Best Student Director and Best Student Producer awards in the Hanoi International Film Fetival in 2018, the short film “Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss” tells the story in the daily life of a saleslady and highlights the issue of job regularization.
The Pinoy drama-comedy short film, which was also voted as the 2nd best short film for 2019 in the 9th Annual Film Poll of Pinoy Rebyu, stars filmmaker Phyllis Grande and actors Angelina Kanapi and Bob Jbeili.
The 22nd Mecal, Festival Internacional de Cortometrajes y Animación de Barcelona happens on March 19 to April 5, 2020.
Other Filipino films in competition in festivals include the “Basurero” of Jericho Rosales in competition at the Tampere Film Festival in Finland, full-length films “Write About Love” of Descendants of the Sun actor Rocco Nacino and Janine Gutierrez’s “Babae at Baril” competing for Best Picture while “LSS” starring Gabbi Garcia will be in a Special Program screening at the 2020 Osaka Asian Film Festival.
Meanwhile, Pinay actress Mara Lopez bagged the Best Supporting Actress award for the film “Jesusa” in the the foreign language category at the 2020 North Europe International Film Festival (IFF) in London.
The 19-minute documentary about Supertyphoon Yolanda entitled “To Calm the Pig Inside (Ang Pagpakalma sa Unos)” of Joanna Vasquez Arong won the Grand Jury Prize at Utah’s 2020 Slamdance Film Festival.
Filipino indie actor Louise Abuel of “Edward” movie won the Best Actor Award at the Dhaka International Film Festival.
